When it comes to what can and can’t be considered an art form, opinions tend to vary drastically. The majority would agree that drawing is a form of art, despite the fact that technical drawing is hardly anything impressive to look at. A beautiful drawing of a person, however, is not only stunning to look at, and took an enormous amount of skill, but is certainly art. But what then does and doesn’t count as art in the various forms of medium available to people?
In the early days, video games were extremely simply visually, but still a great form of entertainment. Not many back in the early days of video games dared to suggest that the games were art. Today, however, video games and the games we enjoy when online casino gambling as a form of art is a debate that comes up more frequently. So can videogames be considered as a form of art or not? What Is Art?
It helps to look at the definition of what is, before getting to deeply into a debate as to whether video games are or aren’t art. In the dictionary art is defined as human creativity applied to a medium, often visual, to create a work that is appreciated for nothing more than it’s beauty, or emotional stimulation, alone. In other words art has no real practical value. That is to say; it does not make life easier, serves no practical function, and does not hold value based on its materials of creation. It’s value lies entirely in that it is pleasant to look at, and may stimulate and emotional response.
If looking at video games, the majority are created as a form of entertainment. There function is, therefore, to provide a person with a form of amusing themselves. The same can be said for movies. However, there is not just one genre of movies, just like there is not just one genre of video games. Some movies are created to stimulate tension or excitement in a viewer, while others stimulate sorrow or sadness. Both types of movie are still under the broad category of being a film, but were made to achieve different results.
In the video game world, a similar situation exists.
Some Games Are Art By Definition
In the broad range of what are all referred to as video games, there are some games that were created to be an interpretative, emotionally stimulating experience. The games use visual imagery, as well as stirring music, to achieve nothing but stimulate emotion in the player. The experience is still interactive, therefore giving it the label of a video game, but definition that game can certainly be considered to be a form of art.
This would not apply to all video games, although a level of creativity went into video games of all types, but for certain video games the label of art should certainly apply, as it does for certain types of films. Some may disagree with this conclusion, but based on the dictionary definition of what constitutes as art, video games can be art.
