The idea of touring the world is one that many people would love to try, but it can seem like an unachievable fantasy when you take into account the realities of work, home, family, and finances. If you dream of seeing the world and experiencing a whole host of different cultures and diverse landscapes, visiting historical sites and enjoying foreign cuisines, there are several ways to accomplish this without breaking the bank. Have a serious look at how much you could afford, or how much you could save to pay for your vacation, and decide what countries you would most like to visit. Then have a look at the options for traveling and see if you could make your dream a reality.
Don’t be dissuaded from trying a cruise by preconceptions you may have formed that they are not your kind of “thing.” Cruises are a relaxing and stress-free way to travel to all sorts of exotic locations. You can tour around a specific coastline, for example, the Mediterranean, stopping at ports in all the countries on the route. Or you could explore a group of islands such as the Caribbean or the Canaries. The accommodation ranges from standard right up to luxury suites, but the cheaper cabins are very well appointed, and even down in the lower sections of the ship you will find the journey pleasant and soothing. There will be onboard entertainment, but there’s no pressure or requirement to attend any of it. You will also have access to cinemas, games rooms, spas, gyms, a swimming pool, a library; plenty of places to enjoy your time at sea between ports. Most ships have twenty-four-hour buffets, and the food on board is bountiful and very high quality. When you disembark at each country, you will usually have a choice of taking a guided tour or exploring by yourself. It’s true that to cruise right around the world does come in at a fair price, and would usually require six months or more saving, but it must be one of the most trouble-free options.
Obviously, you can’t literally drive around the world, and you’d need to factor in trips across oceans and seas, with the easiest method being to fly to your first location, e.g., Paris, hire a car, and drive across the continent via as many other European countries as you like. However, you are free to travel when you want, stay where you want and see whatever parts of each country you desire. If you hire a car, you can drop it off at the airport when you finish your vacation or fly to your next destination, so there are few restrictions on where you can start and finish. Remember to ensure you have the correct documentation for all the countries you will be driving through, and ensure you know the relevant rules of the road.
Recreational vehicles and caravans
It’s not practical to transport an RV from the States overseas, so you will need to hire in the country where you commence your tour. It is a great way of traveling, however, giving you the ultimate in freedom with the only restriction being the location of suitable campsites. Otherwise, you can visit any points of interest you fancy, eat and drink in comfort, and sleep whenever you like. A motorhome is a good option if you’re taking the kids, as they can keep themselves entertained much more easily than in a car, and if they need to stop for comfort breaks, you have all the facilities to hand. You can always book into a restaurant or hotel if you feel like a change or a taste of luxury now and again, but in essence, you are your own boss and free to do as you please. If you run out of supplies, there are camping and caravanning centers that can give you a hand. For example, if you were traversing the Australian Outback and needed a sunscreen, you could easily buy this product at a specialist retailer. Do bear in mind that the RVs you are used to seeing in the States are not the standard in the rest of the world. They are too big to drive around a lot of the worlds’ road systems, so don’t assume your foreign trip will be in an American style RV. You can find them in certain places, but even so, you will then be restricted to the routes you can take, and many of the most scenic roads will be off limits for these vehicles. Have a browse online to see what is available for hire in your chosen destination and consider whether the vehicles available will suit your needs.
Work your way around the world
If you don’t have ties that will restrict your activities, but you lack the wherewithal to fund an around the world trip, you could consider the possibility of working for your passage. Cruise ships are the most likely source of jobs, and they usually have opportunities for people with appropriate skills to work for them. If you have the freedom to spend several months at a time working in different countries, you can find jobs at tourist resorts in the summer seasons and ski resorts in the winter. If you have an adventurous spirit, you could tackle more unusual jobs like driving cattle. It could take you a few years to get all the way around the world, but people who have taken this approach find it to be a rewarding and memorable experience that enriches their lives and gives them a new perspective on life. Alternatively, if you work as a freelancer or your job allows you to telecommute, you can live wherever you like as long as you have an Internet connection. Then you can see every country across the globe and still be earning an income.
There are many different ways of circumventing the globe, both in terms of the route you take to get from place to place, your method of travel, and the activities you undertake en route. However you accomplish your trip around the world, it is sure to be one of the most memorable experiences of your life.
