Top Tips for Buying Roof Boxes

in Travel Tips on 18/03/19

A car roof box is a great addition to any car, allowing drivers to haul more cargo with their vehicle. Roof boxes come in a variety of shapes and sizes, so it can be difficult to choose the car roof box that will work best for you. Fortunately, there are a few simple tips you can follow in order to narrow down your options and choose the roof box that will be able to serve your needs best.

Determine What You Need to Carry

Before you research the various roof boxes available on the market, the first thing you should figure out is what items you would like to carry in your roof box. Large items will require you to purchase a larger box, while an array of boxes are available if you’re planning on carrying smaller items. Having an idea of the items that you will be carrying in your roof box will help you determine whether you need a larger and bulkier roof box or a smaller and leaner one.

Consider How Often You’ll Use It

The amount of times that you plan to use your roof box is a factor that can help you determine which roof box you should purchase. If you’re planning to use your roof box frequently, then you should look into more permanent boxes that won’t impede your vehicle use. For example, there are times when a roof box can prevent a vehicle from entering a building with a low clearance roof. You therefore need to consider the places that you’re planning on travelling to if you want to keep your roof box permanently attached to your car. For drivers who only need a roof box every once in a while, finding a roof box that’s easy to install and uninstall is a must.

Focus On Compatibility

Vehicle compatibility is of the utmost importance when choosing a roof box. While many boxes are universal, you will find that some boxes can prevent access to certain parts of your car or may decrease the visibility that you have while driving. When researching roof boxes that have been on the market for some time, there should be plenty of information regarding compatibility with different vehicles. Try searching for a model of roof box along with your specific car make and model to learn more about the experiences that other car owners have had with their roof boxes.

Consider the Case Material

Roof boxes aren’t just limited to hard cases. There are also soft-case roof boxes, known as roof bags, which can be cheaper than their hard-shelled counterparts. Roof bags are typically not as durable as hard-case roof boxes, but they still offer a lot of protection for their contents. Additionally, unlike a hard-shelled roof box, roof bags can be stored away easily when they’re not being used. If you’re on a tighter budget and don’t need the protection that a hard-shelled roof box has to offer, you might want to consider purchasing a roof bag instead.
